Blackheads, or open comedones, are a type of acne. Excess sebum, or oils, mix with dirt and also with dead skin to clog or block hair follicles. The blockage creates a bump, and when melanin oxidation is added to the mix a dark spot appears on the skin, which is referred to as a blackhead.
